To do the first step
There is a famous quote about a journey of a thousand miles beginning with a single step. My first step through the doors of Ericsson Greece in 2003 was the start of an incredible career journey, which exceeded the mileage stated in the quote, as well as my own expectations. At the time, I felt ready and excited about the opportunity to work as a support engineer and solutions integrator with a well-known multinational company. But I had no idea where the path would lead or how amazing the experience would be.
Along the way, I learned a lot and I now know that in this industry it is important to be open to learning and to dedicate time to further develop your knowledge. In my job, I have always had access to supportive training and had many opportunities to learn from others. I think seeking help and advice from more experienced professionals is essential and has been a key factor in my own success. But learning alone won’t get you to the finish line, and it’s important to understand that. To succeed, you need a little luck on your side, and luck, I believe, is where preparation meets opportunity. Here at Ericsson, I had many opportunities throughout my career to take on more complex tasks and assignments, and because I had the basics in place, I was ready to seize them when they arose. were presenting. So, if like me, you are not ready to fail, my advice is to be sure to prepare!
Early in my career, I was thrilled to get my first support ticket, wrap up my first IP network design, enforce my first firewall policy, deploy my first network, serve my first customer and pass my first certification exam. All of these firsts have shaped me throughout my career, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. My enthusiasm for every task given to me is a constant theme in my work, and each task helps me further develop my skills and knowledge.
Over the past six years, I have successfully navigated my Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) certification processes, anchoring certified security expertise in Austria and in the rest of Europe. To date, I have gained significant international experience working on complex transformation and service delivery projects in Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Switzerland, Serbia, Germany and Austria. I love the opportunity to work in new environments on a professional level as well as experience new cultures on a more personal level.
My area of expertise covers charging, IPTV and smart meters, but for now I am focused on 5G reliability and network security, having been assigned to security roles in the provision of solutions. A lot of people would be bored if they had to work in the same field or job for 20 years, but for me working on various projects has just made me more passionate about security as I understand its growing importance in the world of today. Moreover, I find that it becomes more exciting every moment.
At Ericsson, our product security and privacy control frameworks are key to meeting our customers’ security and privacy commitments to their subscribers, ensuring their data is protected. Security requires a holistic approach and we must always keep technology, people and process in mind. Here, security is built into every product, and the company ensures this with qualified and trained people to ensure that the mandatory security processes are followed and integrated at all times.
Make the dialogue happen
There are so many different stakeholders in a client project environment, each approaching security from their own perspective: business, IT security, ISMS and risk management, privacy and data protection, compliance, security architecture, assurance and security operations. Countless in-depth discussions are required to achieve security from all angles. We know that security needs change over time and therefore require ongoing dialogue. Solid security is the result of constant effort and commitment.
I love working for a company that openly invites its customers to dialogue about safety. This dialogue is essential, and I am truly proud to participate in such discussions at my current base in Austria, helping local clients, customers and partners with my expertise and advice.
Commit and invest in security
There is an exceptional collective security awareness within Ericsson, as security applies to our entire end-to-end value stream. Every software development project begins with a risk assessment and privacy impact assessment to ensure adequate security by design, and Ericsson security masters are present in local project teams with our customers to ensure that our secure products are deployed, integrated and operated in a secure manner. Ericsson security professionals regularly attend internal security chapter meetings.
Although many companies today stress the importance of security, not all are willing to put their money where they say, as the saying goes. I found that Ericsson is really committed to investing in the region, and that really helps me work as efficiently as possible. All of our secure products and solutions come with implemented security features that must be integrated with the customer’s environment and controls to enforce security and privacy.
Ericsson’s Security Reliability Model (SRM) is the mandatory control framework for data security and privacy, which is based on industry standards and best practices. Billions of subscribers and mobile devices are currently managed by Ericsson equipment and solutions, and SRM acts as a catalyst to deliver, ensure and embed security and privacy in all of these products and solutions. Additionally, the defined principles of our security guidance and integrity program, including the security master concept, particularly within delivery organizations, allow me, as a security master, to maintain my security knowledge regularly updated while conducting discussions on the subject with our customers.
Reflect and move forward
When people ask me what has been the key to my success in my career, I tell them that there is honestly no single answer, but continuous learning is a big part of it. I always make sure to adapt to the environment I find myself in, whether it requires me to develop a particular skill or a soft skill through practical activities, training or certifications. I feel that doors have opened for me in this company due to my constant dedication and desire to learn, which allows me to complete project assignments around delivery and solution integration. The support and mentorship provided by my colleagues and the continuous learning opportunities presented to me have been instrumental in my growth and development.
I’m proud of what I’ve achieved so far wearing my Ericsson badge, and I’m also excited because I know the journey continues. There is a plethora of opportunities for me as there is no shortage of work in this field. I really look forward to assisting our clients as a security professional and concluding secure solutions so that their security controls remain effective tomorrow and beyond.
