Doom designer John Romero is working on a new FPS with a “major publisher”

Legendary game creator John Romero – best known for his work on developer id Software’s flagship ’90s shooter series including Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake – has announced he’s working on a new FPS in collaboration with a “publisher major” still unknown.

Romero shared the news in a statement posted on Twitterrevealing that the project is being handled by Romero Games – who recently worked on mafia strategy title Empire of Sin for publisher Paradox Interactive – and will be built around an “original and new” IP.

Beyond that, details are slim – the Official FAQs says “it’s far too early to share any further information” – with the rest of the announcement only noting that Romero Games is currently recruiting across a range of positions for its new FPS, and that it’s particularly keen to hear from those who have experience with Unreal Engine 5.

Sigil, the unofficial fifth installment of John Romero’s Doom, was released in 2019.

While Romero Games recently worked on Empire of Sin, this title was primarily crafted by famed designer and developer Brenda Romero. John Romero’s previous design credit was on Sigil, the unofficial fifth installment of Doom, announced to coincide with the game’s 25th anniversary in 2018 and released the following year.

This project – which included 18 new levels designed by Romero – was well received and Romero has since announced that he is working on a sequel that will use Doom 2. After that, the designer said he would turn his attention to another property classic from id Software, creating new maps for Quake, Doom’s flagship sequel. And that’s not all; Romero also revealed that he is working on a memoir which will be released next year.
