Josh McCullar Architects LLC is a design-driven firm creating timeless, site-specific architecture for vision-driven clients on projects ranging from private museums / art galleries, churches / sacred spaces and modern residences to urban sites and rural. The firm is looking for candidates to interview for the architect position for a job which will start in early 2022. This is a full-time salaried position and is considered permanent, with opportunities for a talented architect to contribute. to the enterprise body of high quality, and work well executed. This position will work closely with the Chief of Staff in an open studio environment. Although the company is based in Richmond, Virginia, its active customer base extends from eastern Pennsylvania, across the mid-Atlantic and to South Carolina. Applicants with experience along the East Coast or even nationwide are desirable, and especially those who can find new project managers in the region for small to medium-sized cultural and institutional work.

This position will be responsible for all or part of the work phases (depending on the project) including: initiating concept design, producing design and construction development document sets, coordinating with all engineering disciplines and executing normal construction observation services in accordance with industry and AIA standards. This position will also evolve towards assistance with strategic marketing and customer research.

Qualifications:

  • Professional degree in architecture with 7-10 years (preferably) full-time experience in carrying out projects (types mentioned) from design to construction (note: 5-8 years of experience may be considered depending on skills )
  • Licensed architect (preferred)
  • American citizen with no criminal history
  • Exceptional design talent, as evidenced by the portfolio of work
  • Working academic knowledge of architectural history and modern architecture, with the ability to identify and research relevant design precedents
  • Ability to integrate architecture, interior design, site planning and landscape architecture throughout the design practice
  • In-depth understanding of the programming required for public cultural spaces and private residential spaces
  • Ability to use hand sketches to communicate ideas
  • Ability to produce schematic design models in Sketchup or Revit and integrate them into rendering plugins (company will support candidate’s recommendation)
  • Exceptional digital rendering capabilities built into Revit
  • Ability to produce complete construction document sets in Revit
  • Exceptional understanding and working knowledge of construction and material assemblies including: steel, wood, concrete, masonry and glazing
  • Ability to coordinate architectural work with all engineering disciplines
  • Ability to research and apply building codes to work, and ability to produce life safety code plans (for non-residential projects)
  • Ability to meet with code and zoning officials as needed
  • Exceptional written, verbal and visual communication skills
  • Collaborative problem-solving skills with a professional work ethic
  • Ability to present and discuss work to clients
  • Ability to converse easily with construction contractors over the phone and on site
  • Willingness to travel out of state occasionally for site visits or to help find leads
  • Willingness to help when asked for proposals, client interviews and contracts
